MRI Technician: Basic details

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It is a medical imaging technique used to generate images of inner human anatomy. MRI scan uses magnetic and radio frequency waves to generate images of internal organs of human body. Images generated this way are then used to diagnose diseases and other conditions present inside the human body and organs.

MRI scans are used to diagnose conditions such as- musculoskeletal problems and injuries, brain ailments, bone ailments, soft tissue ailments, ENT ailments and vascular ailments.

Main tasks of an MRI technician include-

• Preparing the patient for the scan
• Providing instructions to the patient
• Setting up the MRI scanner
• Adjusting the MRI scanner parameters
• Positioning the patient for the scan
• Operate the scanner (handle the controls and/or software)
• Record the scanned images and results
• Follow necessary safety precautions and directions

MRI technicians usually work under the guidance of qualified Doctors. They follow instructions provided by the Doctor, operate the scanner, record the images and hand over the record to the Doctor (for diagnosis).

Nature of course: It is a medical certificate course. On course completion, one will get certificate from the institute. It is a job oriented medical certificate course and helps acquire key MRI scan technician skills.

Duration

Duration: Depending upon the institute, duration could be anywhere between 3 to 12 months.

Eligibility criteria

Eligibility criteria: 12th passed or relevant Diploma course passed (or equivalent) is the minimum qualification required.

10th passed folks (from a recognized board), who have working experience in the field of X-Ray or CT Scan are also eligible to pursue this course (depending upon the eligibility criteria set by the institute). Some paramedical institutes are also known to accept 10th passed applicants. Please check the status, reliability & accreditation of such institutes properly before securing admission.
