Some popular ratings courses are GP (General Purpose) Rating, Deck Rating and Engine Rating. Eligibility criteria

To be considered eligible to pursue this course, candidates must satisfy some requirements. They are –

 

Age limit: Must be between 17.5 to 25 years (in cases of most of the institutes offering this course).

 

Educational qualifications: Being 10+2 passed (any stream, with English subject) from a recognized board is the minimum qualification required. Candidates possessing advanced qualifications are also eligible to apply!

 

Physical and medical standards: Candidate should be physically and medically (eyesight and hearing) fit, as per the Merchant Shipping guidelines.

 

Saloon Rating Admission and career prospects

Many maritime institutes in India are offering saloon rating course at the moment. Deserving candidates are selected after written test and/or interview. After securing admission, candidates undergo 6 months long academic program. After course completion and formalities like document submission, successful candidates will be given CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate).

 

Candidates who possess CDC are eligible to join merchant navy ships. Saloon rating holders usually work in the kitchen of the ship, taking care of catering and hospitality affairs.

 

They may start off with ranks as low as mess boy, assistant steward or steward. Gradually, they may rise through the ranks like second cook, cook, and chief cook!
