List of Best Engineering Courses After 12th

Do you want to become an Engineer? Do you want to pursue a good engineering course after 12th? If yes, this article will be of help to you. Here, you will be reading about the best engineering courses available in India.

In simple terms, Engineering is the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures. This definition is especially true if we consider the origin, history and initial stages of ‘engineering’.

Earlier, engineering used to focus mainly on construction of structures, design and manufacturing of machines, military applications etc. Engineering used to consist of few main disciplines such as – mechanical engineering, civil engineering and electrical engineering. These branches are called the core branches of engineering.

Things have changed now! Engineering is a very broad field now. The broad field of engineering is made up of various disciplines and sub-disciplines. Each discipline focuses on a particular area of applied science, technology and types of application.

Engineering is a very popular choice among Indian students who have completed 12th standard. Numerous engineering education institutes have popped up in India in the past 15 years.

This increase in the number of engineering colleges have resulted in increased number of seats. It is relatively easy to get admission in an engineering college now. Also check – courses after 12th Science (PCM & PCB).

There are four main types of engineering courses available in India. Let us check them out –

Types of engineering courses in India (Diploma, UG, PG & Advanced)

  1. Diploma courses (3 years long)
  2. Bachelor’s Degree courses (also known as B.E. or B.Tech. – 4 years long)
  3. Postgraduate courses (M.Tech. or PGDM programs – 2 years long)
  4. Post Doctoral programs (PhD) in engineering (3 years).

Eligibility criteria

  • Diploma courses – passed 10th standard from a recognized board with Science and Mathematics subjects.
  • B.E. or B.Tech. – passed 10+2 Science stream with PCM subjects from a recognized board. Minimum aggregate marks required is 50% (may vary).
  • PG courses – completed relevant Bachelor’s Degree course from a recognized institute or university.
  • PhD programs – completed relevant Master’s Degree course from a recognized institute or university.

Diploma in Engineering after 10th & lateral entry

Diploma in Engineering course can be pursued right after completing 10th standard! Course duration is 3 years. After completing the 3 years long Diploma program, successful candidates may secure admission directly in the 2nd year (3rd semester) of Engineering Degree (B.E. or B.Tech.) program! This entry is called the lateral entry.

What can you do after completing 12th?

12th passed students are eligible to pursue B.E./B.Tech. as well as Diploma in Engineering courses. Most of the engineering courses have ’12th passed with PCM subjects’ as the main eligibility criteria. Some engineering disciplines are open to PCMB passed students only.

Higher studies

After completing Diploma in Engineering, one may go for B.E. or B.Tech. Degree.

After completing B.E. or B.Tech., one may go for relevant PG courses such as M.E., M.Tech., M.Sc. or PGDM courses.

After completing Master’s level course, one may go for research oriented Post Doctoral program (PhD).

Engineering Entrance tests and admission

To secure admission in a reputed engineering college, one must appear for (and crack) the relevant entrance test. For example, to get into an IIT, one must score valid marks in JEE entrance test. Many private engineering institutes conduct their own private entrance test.

As I mentioned before, engineering is a very broad field. It is made up of various disciplines and sub-disciplines. Each discipline focuses on a specialized field. You may also check – Courses after 12th arts & Medical courses after 12th Science.
