GP Rating course: Basic details
Aboard a merchant navy ship, crew works on two main areas- Deck side and Engine side. GP ratings is one such course that trains students in aspects related to deck as well as engine side! In short, after completing the course, a candidate will be able to take on responsibilities and tasks on the deck side as well as engine side. Along with deck and engine aspects, STCW (Safety training) courses are also covered in this program. Some of the safety training topics covered are- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Oil Tanker Familiarization, Personal Survival Techniques and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility.

GP Rating: Course details
Pre sea GP Ratings training is 6 months long course. It is a fully residential training program. Subjects covered in the course include- deck training, engine training, swimming, physical drills and exercises, personal safety techniques, ship familiarization and fire fighting drills.
Eligibility criteria, physical & medical fitness
To be considered eligible to pursue GP Ratings course, one must satisfy age limit, educational requirements and medical standards. Let us check out each criteria out-
Age limit: Candidate must be between 17½ to 25 years of age (at the time when the course starts).
Educational qualifications: Minimum educational qualification required is 10th passed with Mathematics, Science and English subjects (higher qualification will also do the trick). Minimum aggregate mark needed is 40% (10th board exam). Candidate must also have score at least 40% marks in English subject alone (in 10th board exam).
Medical standards: Candidate should be fit physically and mentally. Candidate should not be suffering from abnormalities or conditions that will prevent him from taking on seafaring role in the future. Eyesight: Normal 6/6 vision in both eyes without glasses and no color blindness. Minimum height required is 157 cm. Weight should be in proportion to height (minimum 48 kg).
Admission process
Most institutes follow the direct admission process. Candidates have to fill the admission/registration form of the institute and apply for admission. If one satisfies the eligibility criteria, the institute may offer a seat, depending on the marks scored by the candidate in board examination.
Few institutes have their own selection procedure that consists of qualifying examination and interview.
Evaluation and certificates
Evaluation of a candidate will be done through oral, written and practical tests. Mid-term test will be held after a batch goes through half of the GP Rating course. Final examination is the main evaluation test and will be held at the end of the 6 months long program. You may also check – Diploma in Marine Engineering after 10th, Merchant Navy courses after 10th, & List of courses after 10th.
After completing final examination and STCW course, CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate) and other certificates (representing course completion) will be provided to successful candidates.
GP Rating scope, jobs & salary
After going through final evaluation exam and obtaining necessary certificates, successful candidates may start working as seamen aboard merchant navy ships (Indian or Foreign). One may work on deck side or engine department (as deck or engine crew). Starting salary could be anywhere between 25-45K INR. It depends upon factors such as – profile of the employer, type of the job, aptitude of the candidate and more.
With promotions, one may become AB Seaman, Motorman etc. After gaining 36 months of sea service experience, one becomes eligible to appear for 2nd Mate Examination. Using this exam, one has the chance to get promoted to Officer’s level. With further sea service and exams, one may rise through Officer ranks and become a Captain too!
