The reality is that there exist only paramedical nursing courses, which can be pursued right after 10th! Most of the good nursing courses recognized by the INC (Indian Nursing Council) have 10+2 as the minimum eligibility criteria.

INC is the regulatory body, when it comes to nursing education in India. From career prospects’ point of view, it’d be beneficial for students to pursue nursing programs that have been recognized and approved by the INC.

List of paramedical courses related to nursing after 10th

The eligibility criteria in case of the above mentioned paramedical courses is 10th pass. Course duration is 6 months. After completing any of the above mentioned course, one may start working as a paramedic in the healthcare sector. If you are interested in better courses, do read the next section.

After completing 12th standard, there are 3 main streams available-

• Science
• Commerce
• Arts

There are Degree and Diploma nursing courses available, which can be pursued after completing any of the above mentioned streams (11th and 12th). Let us check out those courses.

These are the main nursing programs available in India, which can be pursued after completing 12th standard. There exist PG courses too, which can be done after graduation. Some of the well known PG courses are-

PG courses can be used to specialize in various specialties available in the medical profession.

Eligibility criteria

B.Sc. Nursing (Basic)– 10+2 Science stream passed with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English subjects from a recognized board. Minimum aggregate marks required may vary from one institute to another (generally around 50% marks). Candidate must be at least 17 years of age.

GNM– 10+2 passed (preferably Science with PCB subjects) from a recognized board. Minimum aggregate marks required may vary from one institute to another (generally around 50% marks). Candidate must be at least 17 years of age. Eligibility criteria may vary from one institute to another. Many institutes give admission to 10+2 passed students from any stream (Science/Commerce/Arts).

ANM– 10+2 passed in Science or Arts stream from a recognized board. Minimum aggregate marks required may vary from one institute to another (generally around 50% marks). Candidate must be at least 17 years of age. Some institutes do have relaxed eligibility criteria. There exist many institutes that allow 10+2 passed students from any stream (Science/Commerce/Arts) pursue this course.

B.Sc. Nursing (Post Basic)– must be 10+ 2 passed from Science or Arts stream and must also have completed GNM program. Candidate must be a registered nurse with the State Nurses Registration Council.

Career paths for nursing aspirants

The best way ahead for 10th standard students who are interested in nursing would be to go for Science stream with Biology group. After completing 11th and 12th, one may pursue B.Sc. in Nursing (Basic course). After completing the course, one may register with State Nurse Registration council and become a Registered Nurse!

After B.Sc. in Nursing, one may also go for PG courses like M.Sc. in Nursing or PG Diploma in Nursing (specialties).

If you are not interested in Science stream, you may go for Arts stream. After completing 11th and 12th standards in Arts stream, one may take up ANM or GNM course. GNM would be the better choice.

After completing GNM course, one may follow it up with B.Sc. in Nursing (Post Basic). After that, one may go for advanced courses like M.Sc. Nursing and PG Diploma Nursing.

Nursing graduate can earn around 15-25K INR (average figure) in private sector (in the beginning phase of his/her career).
