Biomedical Engineering

What is biomedical engineering all about? Who is a biomedical engineer, what are his/her tasks? What is it like to be a biomedical engineer, what will be the job profile like? You will find answers to these questions in the next section.

Biomedical Engineering: An Introduction

Biomedical Engineering is a branch of engineering that applies principles of Science, Engineering, Design and Material Science to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes.

There are many applications of biomedical engineering in the healthcare sector. Diagnosis, therapeutic treatment and rehabilitation are some such areas of applications!

In simple terms, this field can be said to be a combination of engineering technology and medical science. Both these disciplines are brought together, so that they work together, for healthcare purposes.

Some of the important tasks of a Biomedical Engineer includes- R&D (Research and Development) work, design and development of clinical equipment, surgical equipment, implants, diagnostic and imaging equipment, pharmaceutical drugs and equipment for patients with special needs.

Let us check out the course details now-

Course details

Diploma in Biomedical Engineering is a Diploma certificate program. This course can be pursued by students who have passed 10th standard as well as 12th standard (Science stream).

Duration: Course duration is 3 years. In cases of most of the institutes offering this course, the academic program is divided into 6 semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months.

Diploma in Biomedical Engineering course trains students in areas such as- Chemistry, Medical Sensors, Medical Imaging Equipment, Application of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in Medical Technology and Instrumentation.

Eligibility criteria

Students who have passed 10th standard from a recognized board are eligible to pursue this course. This course can also be pursued after completing 10+2 Science stream from a recognized board!

Admission process and Colleges

Many polytechnic, technical education and engineering institutes across India are offering this program. Most institutes usually have the ‘direct admission’ or ‘merit based admission’ process. Interested students have to approach the institute and fill up the admission form. Seats will be allotted to deserving students on the basis of marks scored by them in 10th board examination (usually in Mathematics and Science subjects).

Note: This is the syllabus of GTU (Gujarat Technological University). Syllabus and course structure may vary from one University/State to another. However, the core subjects and syllabus will remain the same. Most of the subjects mentioned above have both classroom lectures and practical sessions associated with them. In case of last year (5th and 6th semesters), project work is involved. Students will have to undertake and complete a project work related to the field of Biomedical Engineering, under the guidance of faculty members.

Further studies and PG courses

After completing Diploma in Biomedical Engineering program, one may go for Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./B.Tech.) in Biomedical Engineering! In most Degree Engineering colleges, certain percentages of seats are reserved for Diploma certificate holders. This entry is known as the lateral entry. Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E. / B.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may make the ‘DtoD’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree!

After that, one may go for Master’s education or PG Diploma programs. Relevant M.E./M.Tech., M.Sc. and PG Diploma courses will enable one to specialize in disciplines within the Biomedical Engineering sector. Some such areas of specialization includes-

  • Biomechanics
  • Bioinformatics
  • Biomaterials
  • Medical Instrumentation

If you are interested in management program, you may go for MBA (after graduation)! After completing Master’s program, if you want to go for further advanced studies, PhD program is available in front of you!

Career prospects and job opportunities

Firms involved in healthcare services and healthcare equipment manufacturers are the prime recruiters (surgical equipment, medical imaging equipment, patient monitoring equipment and diagnostic equipment). Firms involved in Research and Development work are also known to recruit biomedical engineers.

Government and private job opportunities exist in front of biomedical engineers. In the core sector (manufacturing of medical equipment), biomedical engineers may work in sections such as- production, quality control and assurance, marketing, management and research.

After pursuing Master’s level course, one could even take up a teaching job (lecturer or instructor) at relevant college/institute.

Some common job profiles available in front of biomedical engineering graduates include-

  • Biomedical engineer
  • Quality Control Engineer
  • Design Engineer
  • Teacher/Lecturer
  • Marketing Professional
  • Research Engineer/Scientist

Salary

Starting salary depends on different factors. Prominent factors are- profile of the employer, employee skills, aptitude and grades attained by the employee. General starting salary in case of diploma biomedical engineers could be anywhere around 10-30k Rupees per month (core sector job). In case of Government job, salary will be based on Pay Band and scale.
