What is ceramic engineering?
Ceramic Engineering is the science and technology of creating objects from inorganic, non-metallic materials.
Useful objects are created from inorganic, non-metallic materials by using processes and techniques such as applying heat, reducing temperature and precipitation reactions.
The discipline of ceramic engineering also covers study and purification of raw materials, study and production of chemical compounds (from which objects are created), study of structure, properties and composition of chemical compounds.
Ceramic engineering is one such science that influences our daily lives in many ways. Ceramic engineering and its principles are applied in the manufacturing of humble household goods/equipment, electronic equipment, medical materials, chemicals as well as giant spacecrafts and aircraft! In short, its areas of application are many!
Ceramic materials are known to possess many useful physical and chemical properties (temperature resistance, strength, electrical and magnetic properties etc). We are also able to create ceramic materials with desired properties in labs as well as supervised conditions. Thanks to the availability of useful properties, the used of ceramic engineering are many!
In simple terms, ceramic engineers are material science professionals, who focus on ceramics. They deal with the study and production of ceramic materials, chemical compounds used in making them, physical and chemical properties of ceramic materials.
They are involved in phases like design, production, research and development of ceramic materials. They play a key role in developing and controlling production procedures, acquiring and preparing raw materials and production of ceramic materials possessing useful properties (conductivity, heat resistance, strength etc).
Indirectly, ceramic engineers play a huge role in the functioning and development of sectors like computing, aerospace, healthcare, construction and power transmission.
Diploma in Ceramic Engineering is a 3 years long program. In cases of most of the institutes offering this course, the academic program is divided into 6 semesters. Each semester lasts for a period of 6 months.
Diploma in Ceramic Engineering course trains students in areas such as- Basic chemistry, material science, chemical reactions, ceramic properties, waste and toxic material management, metallurgy and process control.
Students who have passed 10th standard are eligible to pursue this course. This course can also be pursued after completing 10+2 Science stream (Mathematics group)!
Admission process and Colleges
Many polytechnic, technical education and engineering education institutes across India are offering this program. Most institutes usually have the ‘direct admission’ or ‘merit based admission’ process. Interested students have to approach the institute and fill up the admission form. Seats will be allotted to deserving students on the basis of marks scored by them in 10th board examination (usually in Mathematics and Science subjects).

Note: This is the syllabus of GTU (Gujarat Technological University). Syllabus and course structure may vary from one University/State to another. However, the core subjects and syllabus will remain the same. Most of the subjects mentioned above have both classroom lectures and practical sessions associated with them. In case of last year (5th and 6th semesters), project work and industrial training are present. Students will have to undertake and complete a project work related to the field of Ceramic Engineering, under the guidance of faculty members.
Availability of elective subjects may vary from one institute/university to another. Usually, elective subjects are related to topics like-clay product, bio ceramic and ceramic processing.
Further studies and PG courses
After completing Diploma in Ceramic Engineering program, one may go for Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./B.Tech.) in Ceramic Engineering! In most Degree Engineering colleges, certain percentages of seats are reserved for Diploma certificate holders. This entry is known as the lateral entry. Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E./B.Tech. Ceramic Engineering program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may make the ‘DtoD’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree!
After that, one may go for Master’s education or PG Diploma programs. Relevant M.E./M.Tech., M.Sc. and PG Diploma courses will enable one to specialize in disciplines within the Ceramic Engineering sector.
If you are interested in management program, you may go for MBA program (after graduation)! After completing Master’s program, if you want to go for further advanced courses, M.Phil. and PhD programs are available in front of you!
Career prospects and job opportunities
Government and private sector job opportunities are available in front of ceramic engineers. Applications of ceramic engineering are many! Some such areas of application include –

Starting salary depends on different factors. Prominent factors are- job location, profile of the employer, employee skills and qualification. General starting salary of ceramic engineers is around 10-20k Rupees per month. In case of Government job, salary will be based on Pay Band and scale.
