Computer Engineering: Introduction

Computer Engineering is a discipline that focuses on the study and development of computer software and hardware. It can be said to be an integrated discipline, consisting of elements of electrical engineering, computer science and electronics engineering.

 

Some of the important topics covered in this branch of engineering include- microcontrollers, microprocessors, software development and testing, circuit design, hardware and networking.

 

Computer engineers can be said to have knowledge of the above mentioned topics. With specialization course, they may even become experts at certain topics (chosen ones). Main tasks of computer engineers include designing, planning, testing and supervision of computer systems- both hardware and software.

 

Technology is developing at such a rapid pace that the field of computer engineering is going through many changes. A computer engineer must keep himself/herself up to date with such developments. In short, one must be ready for continuous learning!

 

Course details

Diploma in Computer Engineering is a 3 years long Diploma program. It follows the semester system of learning. Each academic year is divided into two semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months.

 

Few institutes are also offering Integrated program- Diploma + B.Tech. Degree in Computer Engineering.

 

Diploma in Computer Engineering course trains students in areas such as- Software development and testing, hardware, networking, embedded systems, VLSI systems, computer architecture, integrated systems and computation.

 

Eligibility criteria

Students who have passed 10th standard are eligible to pursue this course. This course can also be pursued after 10+2 Science stream schooling too (Mathematics group)!

 

Admission process and Colleges

Many polytechnic, technical education and engineering institutes across India are offering this program. Most institutes usually have the ‘direct admission’ process. Interested students have to approach the institute and fill up the admission form. Seats will be allotted to deserving students on the basis of marks scored by them in 10th board examination (usually in Mathematics and Science subjects).

Note: This is the syllabus of GTU (Gujarat Technological University). Syllabus and course structure may vary from one University/State to another. However, the core subjects and syllabus will remain the same. Most of the subjects mentioned above have both theoretical studies and practical sessions associated with them. In case of last year (5th and 6th semesters), project work is present. Students will have to undertake and complete a project work related to the field of Computer Engineering, under the guidance of faculty members.

 

Elective subjects may vary from one institute/university to another. Usually, elective subjects are related to topics like- Computer Security, Network Security, Animation and Multimedia, Mobile Computing, Application Development, Networking Management and Administration.

 

Further studies and PG courses

After completing Diploma Computer Engineering program, one may go for Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./B.Tech.) in Computer Engineering! In most Degree Engineering colleges, certain percentages of seats are reserved for Diploma certificate holders. This entry is known as the lateral entry. Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E./B.Tech. Computer Engineering program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may make the ‘DtoD’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree!

 

After that, one may go for Master’s education. M.E./M.Tech. program will enable one to specialize in disciplines within the Computer Engineering sector. Some such areas of specialization are-

Other than M.E./M.Tech., graduates may also go for MCA (Master of Computer Application) or M.Sc. in Computer Science. If you are interested in management program, you may go for MBA program!

 

Career prospects and job opportunities

Job opportunities are available in Government as well as Private sector enterprises. Computer Engineering Diploma holders may work as software or hardware engineers in such enterprises.

 

Self employment is another good opportunity available in front of computer engineers. One may become an independent software engineer or start own hardware sales/support service!

 

Computer engineers may also find a job in IT Companies. Computer manufacturing units are also known to recruit computer engineers. Firms designing and manufacturing sensors, VLSI chips, microcontrollers, microprocessors, circuit boards, computer systems and other such parts are also known to recruit computer engineers. Telecom sector companies are also well known recruiters.

 

One may also find work at software development firms. These days, the field of app development has been developing at great pace. One may find a job in this field also.
