Do you want to know more about the discipline of Electrical Engineering? Let us check out the introduction section below and find out more details about this discipline.
Electrical Engineering: Introduction
We all know how important electricity is! Without it, our day to day lives would become very tough to deal with. Electricity is used by us for operating home appliances, office equipment, transportation (in some cases) etc.
Electrical Engineering is a discipline of Engineering that focuses on Electricity, Applications of Electricity, Electronics and Electromagnetism.
During early days, this branch used to focus mostly on generation of electricity, its storage and transmission. Slowly, with advancement in the field of technology, the discipline also started covering applications of electricity. Fast forward to the present, electronics has also become an integral part of this discipline.
In simple terms, this discipline deals with generation of electricity, its storage, transmission, applications, advanced electronics and electromagnetism!
Let us focus on important course details in the next section-
Diploma in Electrical Engineering is a 3 years long Diploma certificate program. The course is divided into 6 semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months.
Few institutes are also offering Integrated program- Diploma + B.Tech. Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Diploma in Electrical Engineering course trains students in areas such as- Electrical Machines, Power transmission, Power Systems, Electronics, Circuit Network, Motors, Generators, Electrical Appliances, Microprocessors, Electromagnetism, Signal processors, Sensors etc.
Students who have passed 10th standard are eligible to pursue this course. This course can also be pursued after 10+2 Science stream (Mathematics group)!
Admission process and Colleges
Many polytechnic, technical education and engineering institutes across India are offering this program. Most institutes usually have the ‘direct admission’ process. Interested students have to approach the institute and fill up the admission form. Seats will be allotted to deserving students on the basis of marks scored by them in 10th board examination (usually in Mathematics and Science subjects).

Note: This is the syllabus of GTU (Gujarat Technological University). Syllabus and course structure may vary from one University/State to another. However, the core subjects and syllabus will remain the same. Most of the subjects mentioned above have both theoretical studies and practical sessions associated with them. In case of last year (5th and 6th semesters), project work is present. Students will have to undertake and complete a project work related to the field of Electrical Engineering, under the guidance of faculty members.
Elective subjects may vary from one institute/university to another.
Further studies and PG courses
After completing Diploma in Electrical Engineering program, one may go for Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./B.Tech.) in Electrical Engineering! In most Degree Engineering colleges, certain percentages of seats are reserved for Diploma certificate holders. This entry is known as the lateral entry. Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E./B.Tech. Electrical Engineering program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may use the ‘DtoD’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree!
After that, one may go for Master’s education or PG Diploma programs. M.E./M.Tech. and PG Diploma programs will enable one to specialize in disciplines within the Electrical Engineering sector. Some such areas of specialization are-
- Power Engineering
- Advanced Electronics
- Computer Science
- Fiber Optics
- Signal and Image Processing
After Master’s program or PG Diploma program, one may go for further advanced course, like the PhD program. If you are interested in management program, you may go for MBA program (after graduation)!
Career prospects and job opportunities
Electrical Engineering is one of the core branches of engineering. That’s why it is one of the evergreen branches. Job availability is often decent, when it comes to this field.
Most manufacturing and production industries make use of electricity and electrical machines. Qualified electrical engineers are needed by such industries to take care of tasks like power transmission, power usage, power auditing, machine monitoring, machine maintenance etc.
Power production and transmission firms are also known to recruit electrical engineers. Construction companies hire electrical engineers to take care of wiring as well as electrical works.
Government job opportunities are also available in front of electrical engineers. Central and State Government setups like Indian Railways, State Electricity Boards, ONGC, OIL, DRDO, Indian Armed Forces, PWD, Municipal Corporations are known to hire electrical engineers.
Diploma holders may also find work at firms manufacturing electrical goods and appliances (like fans, bulbs, refrigerators, AC, stabilizers etc). They may also find work at firms manufacturing other forms of machinery and components like- transformers, wires, motors, generators, circuits, microprocessors, microcontrollers etc.
After going through specialization program, one may also venture into the field of computer science as well as Telecommunication.
Starting salary of an electrical engineer is around 20-35K Rupees per month. Salary may vary, depending upon the job location and profile of the employer. In case of Government job, the salary will be according to the Pay Band and scale.
Some of the well known recruiters hailing from the above mentioned sectors are-
- Indian Railways
- Indian Armed Forces
- State Electricity Boards
- Municipal Corporations
- Anchor (Now Panasonic) Electricals
- Crompton Greaves
- Schneider Electric
- Godrej Electrical and Electronics
- Telecommunication Companies
