Electrical Engineering: Basic details

We all know how important electricity is! Without it, our day to day lives would become very tough to deal with. Electricity is used by us for operating home appliances, office equipment, transportation (in some cases) etc.

Electrical Engineering is a discipline of Engineering that focuses on Electricity, Applications of Electricity, Electronics and Electromagnetism.

During early days, this branch used to focus mostly on generation of electricity, its storage and transmission. Slowly, with advancement in the field of technology, the discipline also started covering applications of electricity. Fast forward to the present, electronics has also become an integral part of this discipline.

In simple terms, this discipline deals with generation of electricity, its storage, transmission, applications, advanced electronics and electromagnetism!

Let us focus on important course details in the next section-

Diploma in Electrical Engineering: Course details

Diploma in Electrical Engineering is a 3 years long Diploma certificate program. The course is divided into 6 semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months.

Few institutes are also offering Integrated program- Diploma + B.Tech. Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Higher studies and PG courses

After completing Diploma in Electrical Engineering program, one may go for Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./B.Tech.) in Electrical Engineering! In most Degree Engineering colleges, certain percentages of seats are reserved for Diploma certificate holders. This entry is known as the lateral entry. Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E./B.Tech. Electrical Engineering program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may use the ‘DtoD’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree!

After that, one may go for Master’s education or PG Diploma programs. M.E./M.Tech. and PG Diploma programs will enable one to specialize in disciplines within the Electrical Engineering sector. Some such areas of specialization are-

  • Power Engineering
  • Advanced Electronics
  • Computer Science
  • Communications
  • Fiber Optics
  • Signal and Image Processing
  • Semiconductors
  • Microelectronics

After Master’s program or PG Diploma program, one may go for further advanced course, like the PhD program. If you are interested in management program, you may go for MBA program (after graduation)!
