Let us check out what exactly is the field of environmental engineering all about. Next section will clear all your doubts-

Environmental Engineering: Introduction

Environmental Engineering is a branch of engineering that focuses on environmental issues and problems. This branch uses principles of engineering and technology, biology, soil science, chemistry and energy management to address environmental issues and improve the overall quality of the environment- at local as well as global scale.

Global warming, pollution (air, water and land), soil erosion, water scarcity etc are some of the prominent problems faced by environment. Environmental Engineering, through research and development, is working towards addressing these issued and finding solutions.

Waste recycling systems, water recycling systems, water purification systems, renewable energy management systems, toxic waste management systems etc have been created due to the branch of environmental engineering. Of course, this branch makes use of principles of other engineering and science fields such as civil engineering, chemical engineering, biology etc .

Diploma in Environmental Engineering: Course details

Diploma in Environmental Engineering is a 3 years long program. In cases of most institutes offering this course, the academic program is divided into 6 semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months.

Few institutes are also offering Integrated program- Diploma + B.Tech. Degree in Environmental Engineering.

Diploma in Environmental Engineering course trains students in areas such as- Basic chemistry, Engineering principles, Pollution control, Energy resources, Water management, Waste management, Waste recycling, Environmental science and Soil science.

Eligibility criteria

Students who have passed 10th standard are eligible to pursue this course. This course can also be pursued after 10+2 Science stream (Mathematics group)!

Admission process and Colleges

Many polytechnic, technical education and engineering institutes across India are offering this program. Most institutes usually have the ‘direct admission’ or ‘merit based admission’ process. Interested students have to approach the institute and fill up the admission form. Seats will be allotted to deserving students on the basis of marks scored by them in 10th board examination (usually in Mathematics and Science subjects).

Note: This is the syllabus of GTU (Gujarat Technological University). Syllabus and course structure may vary from one University/State to another. However, the core subjects and syllabus will remain the same. Most of the subjects mentioned above have both theoretical studies and practical sessions associated with them. In case of last year (5th and 6th semesters), project work is present. Students will have to undertake and complete a project work related to the field of Environmental Engineering, under the guidance of faculty members.

Availability of elective subjects may vary from one institute/university to another. Usually, elective subjects are related to topics like- environmental legislation and audit, environmental impact assessment, environmental protection laws and renewable energy.

Higher studies and PG courses

After completing Diploma in Environmental Engineering program, one may go for Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./B.Tech.) in Environmental Engineering! In most Degree Engineering colleges, certain percentages of seats are reserved for Diploma certificate holders. This entry is known as the lateral entry. Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E./B.Tech. Environmental Engineering program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may make the ‘DtoD’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree!
