Mechanical Engineering: Introduction

Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest branches of Engineering. It is one of the core branches. Though this discipline has existed for a very long time, Mechanical Engineering developed into a separate branch of Engineering during the early 19th century. Industrial revolution that took place in Europe played a key role in the emergence of this branch as an independent discipline. Do you want to know what Mechanical Engineering is all about? Want a proper definition? Next paragraph will be of help to you then!

Mechanical Engineering is the branch of Engineering that deals with design, manufacturing and operation of machinery. This branch uses concepts of engineering, physics and material science for design, manufacturing, operation and maintenance of mechanical systems.

Some of the important topics covered in this branch of engineering include- material science, engineering physics, theory of machines, kinematics of machines, thermodynamics, manufacturing etc. With development in technology, new topics have also been introduced, like- CADD (Computer Aided Design and Drawing), nanotechnology, mechatronics etc.

Concepts of mechanical engineering extend along to other engineering branches also. Some such branches are- industrial engineering, automobile engineering, power engineering, production engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, metallurgical engineering and aeronautical engineering.

This engineering branch touches our day to day lives directly or indirectly. From household equipment like washing machines and grinders to buses and trains that we use for transportation, mechanical engineering and machines are involved in one way or the other!

The above paragraph shows how important this branch of engineering really is! Let us check out important course details in the next section.

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering: Course details

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is a 3 years long program. The academic program is divided into 6 semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months.

Few institutes are also offering Integrated program- Diploma + B.Tech. Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering course trains students in areas such as- machine design, material science, thermodynamics, kinematics, engineering drawing, physics etc.

Higher studies and PG courses

After completing Diploma in Mechanical Engineering program, one may go for Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./B.Tech.) in Mechanical Engineering! In most Degree Engineering colleges, certain percentages of seats are reserved for Diploma certificate holders. This entry is known as the lateral entry. Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E./B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may make use of the ‘DtoD’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree!
