Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering

Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering is a 3 years long Diploma certificate program. This course can be pursued by students who have passed 10th standard as well as 12th (Science stream- mathematics group). In this article, you will be reading details about Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering course, such as- eligibility criteria, admission process, syllabus, PG courses & further studies, career prospects and job profiles.

Mechatronics Engineering

What is mechatronics engineering? What are the tasks of a mechatronics engineer? What’s his/her job like? You’ll find answers to all these questions in the next section.

Mechatronics Engineering: An Introduction

It is a relatively new branch of engineering. Mechatronics Engineering can be said to be an integrated field that consists of elements of other engineering branches such as- electrical engineering, electronics engineering, computer science, control engineering, systems engineering and mechanical engineering.

In short, it can be said to be a multidisciplinary branch that covers topics related to various other engineering branches.

A mechatronics engineer uses principles of electronics, mechanical, control and computer engineering to develop systems, machine and solutions that can be applied to improve productivity and efficiency of process/production. Systems developed by mechatronics engineers can be used in wide variety of areas and industries. In short, its areas of application is very wide.

Course details

Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering is a 3 years long program. In cases of most institutes offering this course, the academic program is divided into 6 semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months.

Few institutes are also offering Integrated program- Diploma + B.Tech. Degree in Mechatronics Engineering.

Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering course trains students in areas such as- Mechanical systems, electrical and electronics systems, control systems, instrumentation, circuits, computer science and programming.

Eligibility criteria

Students who have passed 10th standard are eligible to pursue this course. This course can also be pursued after 10+2 Science stream (Mathematics group)!

Admission process and Colleges

Many polytechnic, technical education and engineering institutes across India are offering this program. Most institutes usually have the ‘direct admission’ or ‘merit based admission’ process. Interested students have to approach the institute and fill up the admission form. Seats will be allotted to deserving students on the basis of marks scored by them in 10th board examination (usually in Mathematics and Science subjects).

Syllabus

To get a better idea about the course structure, I’ve listed down some of the important subjects present in Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering academic program. Note: Not all subjects present in the academic program have been mentioned below.

1st semester subjects-

  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Engineering Physics
  • Engineering Drawing/Graphics
  • Electronic Practice
  • Workshop (Practical)

2nd semester subjects-

  • Applied Mechanics
  • Mechanical Drafting
  • Drafting Application
  • Basics of Electronics Engineering

3rd semester subjects-

  • Digital Circuits

  • Manufacturing Engineering
  • Thermal and Fluid Devices
  • Project Work

Note: This is the syllabus of GTU (Gujarat Technological University). Syllabus and course structure may vary from one University/State to another. However, the core subjects and syllabus will remain the same. Most of the subjects mentioned above have both theoretical studies and practical sessions associated with them. In case of last year (5th and 6th semesters), project work is present. Students will have to undertake and complete a project work related to the field of Mechatronics Engineering, under the guidance of faculty members.

Further studies and PG courses

After completing Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering program, one may go for Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./B.Tech.) in Mechatronics Engineering! In most Degree Engineering colleges, certain percentages of seats are reserved for Diploma certificate holders. This entry is known as the lateral entry. Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E./B.Tech. Mechatronics Engineering program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may use the ‘DtoD’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree!

After that, one may go for Master’s education or PG Diploma programs. Relevant M.E./M.Tech., M.Sc. and PG Diploma courses will enable one to specialize in disciplines within the Mechatronics Engineering sector. Some such well known specializations include-

  • Robotics
  • Instrumentation
  • Software and Programming
  • Control Engineering
  • Embedded Systems
  • Automation

Other than core mechatronics courses, one may also select PG courses related to allied areas such as electrical, electronics, mechanical and computer science engineering!

If you are interested in management program, you may go for MBA program (after graduation)! After completing Master’s program, if you want to go for further advanced courses, M.Phil. and PhD programs are available in front of you!

Career prospects and job opportunities

Government and private sector job opportunities are available in front of mechatronics engineers. Mechatronics engineers possess knowledge and skills that usually can be applied across many industries and areas. This, to an extent, makes them versatile!

Government and private firms involved in areas such as- automation, instrumentation and control, electronics, electrical systems, mechanical systems are known to recruit mechatronics engineers.

Thus, it is safe to say that areas involving production, mechanical systems, electronics systems, Instrumentation and Control hire mechatronics engineers. Other than these areas, they may also work at industries related to allied fields.

Salary

Starting salary depends on a number of different factors. Prominent factors are- profile of the employer, employee skills, aptitude and grades attained by the employee. General starting salary in case of mechatronics engineers is around 10-25k Rupees per month. In case of Government job, salary will be based on Pay Band and scale.
