Mechatronics Engineering: An Introduction
It is a relatively new branch of engineering. Mechatronics Engineering can be said to be an integrated field that consists of elements of other engineering branches such as- electrical engineering, electronics engineering, computer science, control engineering, systems engineering and mechanical engineering.
In short, it can be said to be a multidisciplinary branch that covers topics related to various other engineering branches.
A mechatronics engineer uses principles of electronics, mechanical, control and computer engineering to develop systems, machine and solutions that can be applied to improve productivity and efficiency of process/production. Systems developed by mechatronics engineers can be used in wide variety of areas and industries. In short, its areas of application is very wide.
Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering: Course details
Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering is a 3 years long program. In cases of most institutes offering this course, the academic program is divided into 6 semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months.
Few institutes are also offering Integrated program- Diploma + B.Tech. Degree in Mechatronics Engineering.
Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering course trains students in areas such as- Mechanical systems, electrical and electronics systems, control systems, instrumentation, circuits, computer science and programming.
Eligibility criteria
Students who have passed 10th standard are eligible to pursue this course. This course can also be pursued after 10+2 Science stream (Mathematics group)!
Admission process and Colleges
Many polytechnic, technical education and engineering institutes across India are offering this program. Most institutes usually have the ‘direct admission’ or ‘merit based admission’ process. Interested students have to approach the institute and fill up the admission form. Seats will be allotted to deserving students on the basis of marks scored by them in 10th board examination (usually in Mathematics and Science subjects).

In case of last year (5th and 6th semesters), project work is present. Students will have to undertake and complete a project work related to the field of Mechatronics Engineering, under the guidance of faculty members.
Higher studies and PG courses
After completing Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering program, one may go for Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./B.Tech.) in Mechatronics Engineering! In most Degree Engineering colleges, certain percentages of seats are reserved for Diploma certificate holders. This entry is known as the lateral entry. Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E./B.Tech. Mechatronics Engineering program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may use the ‘DtoD’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree!
