What is power electronics? Who is a power electronics engineer, what are his/her tasks? What is it like to become a power electronics engineer? You’ll find answers to these questions in the following paragraphs.

What is power electronics?

Power electronics is the application of solid-state electronics to the control and conversion of electric power. This branch of engineering deals with the study, design, control, computation and integration of energy processing electronic systems.

Since this branch deals with tasks such as control & conversion of electric power, design, development & control of electronic systems, it is safe to conclude that power engineering has lots to do with electrical engineering and electronics engineering.

We use power electronic devices in our day to day lives. Knowingly or unknowingly, we all use them in our day to day lives. In fact these devices influence our day to day lives in many ways!

Rectifiers and inverters are power electronic devices that we are familiar of. They are used in household electronic devices like Television, PC, battery chargers etc. Other than household electronic devices, power electronic devices are also used in various industries and sectors like transportation, healthcare, power transmission etc.

Power electronics engineers are involved in tasks like study, R&D, design, production and testing of power electronic devices. They are usually hired by players operating in areas like electrical engineering, electronics engineering and power transmission.

Diploma in Power Electronics: Course details

Duration

Diploma in Power Electronics is a 3 years long program. In cases of most of the institutes offering this course, the academic program is divided into 6 semesters. Each semester lasts for a period of 6 months.

Diploma in Power Electronics course trains students in areas such as- electrical and electronic systems, rectifiers, inverters, diodes, generation and transmission of electric power etc.

Eligibility criteria

Students who have passed 10th standard from a recognized board are eligible to pursue this course. This course can also be pursued after completing 10+2 Science stream (Mathematics group) from a recognized board!

Admission process and Colleges

Many polytechnic, technical education and engineering education institutes across India are offering this program. Most institutes usually have the ‘direct admission’ or ‘merit based admission’ process. Interested students have to approach the institute and fill up the admission form. Seats will be allotted to deserving students on the basis of marks scored by them in 10th board examination (usually in Mathematics and Science subjects).

Students will have to undertake and complete a project work related to the field of Power Electronics, under the guidance of faculty members.

Higher studies and PG courses

After completing Diploma in Power Electronics program, one may go for Bachelor’s Degree (B.E./B.Tech.) in Power Electronics! In most Degree Engineering colleges, certain percentages of seats are reserved for Diploma certificate holders. This entry is known as the lateral entry. Diploma holders with good grade may make use of lateral entry and join B.E./B.Tech. Power Electronics program’s 2nd academic year (directly). This way, Diploma holders may make the ‘DtoD’ switch and earn a Bachelor of Engineering/Technology Degree! You may also check – Top ITI courses in India.

After that, one may go for Master’s education or PG Diploma programs. Relevant M.E./M.Tech., M.Sc. and PG Diploma courses will enable one to specialize in disciplines within Power Electronics sector. You may also check – Best Diploma courses in India.

If you are interested in management program, you may go for MBA program (after graduation)! After completing Master’s program, if you want to go for further advanced courses, M.Phil. and PhD programs are available in front of you! You may also check – Scholarships after 12th.

Diploma in Power Electronics scope & jobs

Government and private sector job opportunities are available in front of power electronics professionals. Applications of power electronics are many! Thanks to this fact, power electronics professionals may find a job in more than one sector!

Common sectors/industries where they may work are – electrical industry firms, electronics industry firms, power generation and transmission firms (power plants). In such work setups, they may take on a role in areas such as design, product manufacturing, quality control, marketing and R&D.

If you are an entrepreneur at heart and have access to decent financial resources, you may even start own power electronics devices manufacturing firm (small, medium or large scale).
