OTT (Operation Theatre Technology): Basic details

Who is an operation theatre technician? What exactly are his/her tasks? You’ll find answers to these questions in the next section.

An operation theatre technician is an allied healthcare professional. They are trained to assist Doctors or Surgeons during surgery. Operation theatre technology course is a job oriented paramedical course.

During an operation, various equipment, anaesthesia and instruments are involved. An operation theatre technician is trained to handle these equipment, arrange surgical instruments, provide adequate dose of anaesthesia and assist Doctor or Surgeon performing the surgery.

An OT technician usually is a part of a team that comprises of Doctors/Surgeons, nurses and other paramedical staff. He/she usually functions under the instructions of the Doctor/Surgeon leading the surgery. Besides assisting the Doctor/Surgeon in surgery, OTs are also capable of taking care of basic patient monitoring activities. ICUs, CCUs and Emergency departments are common places where OT technicians can be found in action.

1 OTT (Operation Theatre Technology) certificate courses after 10th

Duration: The certificate course lasts for a period of 1 year.

Eligibility criteria: 10th passed from a recognized board. Minimum marks criteria may exist in case of many institutes. It is generally around 50% marks in board examination.

Admission process: Most institutes follow merit based admission process. Marks scored by students in board examination are taken into consideration. Seats are allotted to deserving candidates based on marks scored by them. Some institutes are also known to have direct admission process.

Further studies: Candidates who possess OTT vocational qualification and experience are eligible to apply for DOTT course. DOTT stands for Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology course.

Note: Please note that only few institutes offer COTT (Certificate Operation Theatre Technology) course in India. Reputed paramedical institutes offer only DOTT and BOTT/B.Sc. OTT programs in UG level. And these diploma & degree programs are meant for 12th passed candidates. So while securing admission, readers must check the reputation, credibility & accreditation status of COTT institutes & programs.

2 OTT (Operation Theatre Technology) diploma courses after 12th

Duration: Course duration is 2 years.

Eligibility criteria: 12th passed with science subjects from a recognized board. Minimum marks criteria may exist in case of many institutes. It is generally around 50% marks in board examination.

Admission process: Depends on the institute. Some institutes follow merit based admission process. Some other institutes follow direct admission process. Merit-based admission process is carried out by conducting relevant entrance examination or selection test.

Further studies: DOTT qualified candidates may pursue relevant Bachelor’s Degree courses such as – Bachelor of OTT or B.Sc. OTT.

3 OTT (Operation Theatre Technology) Bachelor’s Degree courses after 12th

Duration: Course duration is 4 years. It also includes 1 year long internship program (towards the end of the course).

Eligibility criteria: 12th passed with science subjects (physics, chemistry & biology) from a recognized board. Minimum marks criteria may exist in case of many institutes. It is generally around 50% marks in board examination.

Admission process: Depends on the institute. Some institutes follow merit based admission process. Some other institutes follow direct admission process. Merit-based admission process is carried out by conducting relevant entrance examination or selection test.

Further studies: After completing Bachelor’s Degree course, successful candidates may pursue PG level courses such as – Master of OTT, MOTT or PG Diploma courses.

4 OTT (Operation Theatre Technology) Master’s Degree courses after graduation

Duration: Course duration is 2 years.

Eligibility criteria: Completed relevant Bachelor’s Degree program such as – BOTT or B.Sc. OTT from a recognized university.

Admission process: Depends on the institute. Some institutes follow merit based admission process. Some other institutes follow direct admission process. Merit-based admission process is carried out by conducting relevant entrance examination or selection test.

Operation Theatre Technology scope & jobs

Operation theatre technicians are allied healthcare professionals. They play an integral part in the smooth functioning of ICUs, CCUs and Operation theatres in hospitals and clinics.

Government and private hospitals and clinics having surgical wards are known to recruit operation theatre technicians. After higher studies, one may also don the role of an instructor or teacher at relevant training institutes.

Salary

Starting salary depends on a number of different factors. Prominent factors are- profile of the employer, employee skills, aptitude and grades attained by the employee. OT technicians may earn around 10-15k Rupees per month at start. In case of Government job, salary will be based on Pay Band and scale. Abroad, in developed countries, the pay scale is much higher than it is in India.
