Who is an operation theatre technician? What exactly are his/her tasks? You’ll find answers to these questions in the next section.


An operation theatre technician is an allied healthcare professional. They are trained to assist Doctors or Surgeons during surgery. Operation theatre technology course is a job oriented paramedical course.


During an operation, various equipment, anaesthesia and instruments are involved. An operation theatre technician is trained to handle these equipment, arrange surgical instruments, provide adequate dose of anaesthesia and assist Doctor or Surgeon performing the surgery.


An OT technician usually is a part of a team that comprises of Doctors/Surgeons, nurses and other paramedical staff. He/she usually functions under the instructions of the Doctor/Surgeon leading the surgery. Besides assisting the Doctor/Surgeon in surgery, OTs are also capable of taking care of basic patient monitoring activities. ICUs, CCUs and Emergency departments are common places where OT technicians can be found in action.

1 Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology

This course is also known by the short name of DOTT. It is a Diploma certificate program. This course can be pursued after 10th standard as well as 12th standard schooling.


Duration: 3 years (after 10th). 2 years (after 12th).


Eligibility criteria: 10th or 12th passed from a recognized board. Minimum marks criteria may exist in case of many institutes. It is generally around 50% marks in board examination.


Admission process: Most institutes follow merit based admission process. Marks scored by students in board examination are taken into consideration. Seats are allotted to deserving candidates based on marks scored by them. Some institutes are also known to have direct admission process.


Further studies: After completing DOTT course, Diploma holders may go for B.Sc. programs such as B.Sc. in Operation Theatre and Anaesthesia Technology, B.Sc. in OT Technology, B.Sc. in Medical Technology (Operation Theatre) and B.Sc. in Operation Theatre Techniques.


For further advanced studies, one may go for M.Sc., PG Diploma as well as PG Certificate courses.


2 Certificate in Operation Theatre Technology

It is a certification program that can be pursued after completing 10th standard schooling. Though not as valued as the DOTT course, the certification course can be used to acquire key OT skills. The course duration is much shorter and will help one get entry level jobs.


Duration: 6 months to 1 year (depending upon the institute).


Eligibility criteria: 10th or 12th passed from a recognized board. Minimum marks criteria may exist in case of many institutes. It is generally around 50% marks in board examination.


Admission process: Depends on the institute. Some institutes follow merit based admission process. Some other institutes follow direct admission process.


Career prospects and job opportunities

Operation theatre technicians are allied healthcare professionals. They play an integral part in the smooth functioning of ICUs, CCUs and Operation theatres in hospitals and clinics.


Government and private hospitals and clinics having surgical wards are known to recruit operation theatre technicians. After higher studies, one may also don the role of an instructor or teacher at relevant training institutes.



Starting salary depends on a number of different factors. Prominent factors are- profile of the employer, employee skills, aptitude and grades attained by the employee. OT technicians may earn around 10-15k Rupees per month at start. In case of Government job, salary will be based on Pay Band and scale. Abroad, in developed countries, the pay scale is much higher than it is in India.
